Copper Pipes Classification

The classification of copper pipes that are used in HVAC is elementary. It can be divided into two major classes.

The first one is ordinary air conditioning copper pipes and the second one is degreasing air conditioning copper pipes. These two classes have different sizes and properties.

1: Ordinary air conditioning copper pipes

The ordinary air ones are used in R22.

2: Degreasing Air Conditioning copper pipes

Degreasing air conditioning pipes are used in refrigerants such as R410.

2. The specific classification of air conditioning copper pipe materials:

Air conditioning copper pipes have different classifications. The main difference between these classifications is the purity and properties of the copper itself.

Anaerobic copper:

It is known for the high quality pure and oxygen-free copper. This class of copper pipe includes ( TU0, TU1, and TU2) a series of copper tubings.

Meanwhile, the (TUP, TP1, TP2, etc.) include the phosphorus-deoxygenated copper pipe.

Aerobic copper:

Aerobic copper is mainly standard or ordinary pure copper. (T1, T2, T3, etc.) is characterized as tough copper because of the high oxygen content which is found in these copper pipes.

Special copper:

This copper is made by adding different alloys to modify the properties of the copper for certain applications. Special copper includes arsenic copper, silver copper, tellurium copper, etc.

Copper tubes are highly used in our refrigeration and HVAC industry. High-quality copper tubes play a major part in different industries. It is a very simple metal but provides a lot of different benefits for different applications. Widely used all over the world and comes in different categories for different applications. We will talk about the main 3 categories which are TP2, TU1, and T2.


TP2 is basically the phosphorus deoxycopper. TP2 composition is based on phosphorus. This copper tube contains 0.015-0.04% phosphorus, and performances very well under different circumstances such as welding and cold bending. Mainly used for air conditioning, refrigerating, gas stoves, and electrical heating connections.

TU1 is made with precision and it requires a lot of things for manufacturing. The manufacturing cost of TU1 is higher than the other copper tube types, therefore the price of TU1 is also higher than TP2 and T2.


T2 is known as pure copper tubing. The T2 contains 99.90% copper and has a much higher purity value than other copper tubings. For someone who requires high conductivity, the T2 is preferred and offers the best performance value for this specific requirement.

Brass Tube:

Brass tubes are mainly used for water pipe connections and wading connections. It’s also known as a copper-zinc alloy tube. To identify the copper content you can check the value after H in grade to identify the copper content. The rest of the remaining value states the zinc content in brass tubes. Higher copper content means good quality and strength.

1: The first rule of thumb is to look for the color of the copper tube. A good quality copper tube has reddish copper pigment. Although each type of tube has different colors according to its material. The brass on the other hand has a yellowish tint and sometimes it’s even gray. So do keep in mind that if you are buying a copper tube and paying for the high-quality copper promise then you should check if it matches the color scale.

2: Generally good quality copper is produced by a pure copper procedure. That means that even if the copper tube is stretched, the outer and inner surfaces of the tube will remain the same. There will be no identical difference in the surface.

If any kind of metal is added to the copper, the copper tube will look different in color and overall in general.

3: Copper is one of the substances that are soft and easy to bend. However, there are basically 3 types of copper pipes that should be aware of, Hard, Semi-hard, and Soft. Each type of copper tubing can be bent easily without making any cracks on the surface. If you notice that the copper is not bending easily or any cracks are appearing on the surface, then possibly the copper is not quite good enough.
